The delicious Frostbite 2 engine

I’ve been playing BF3 now since release and you wouldn’t think they could improve on an already amazing multiplayer experience. How wrong you can be! The new maps are superb and well plotted out. I thought a lot of the maps in BFBC2 were just vast expanses which were ideal for snipers but in Battlefield 3 there’s some levels where sniping proves very difficult even impossible. I personally play the engineer and it’s nice to have improved weapons that have a better range. The rocket launchers are also punchier providing ‘M’ kills (Mobility Kills) and ‘K’ kills (Catastrophic kills) producing a much more realistic experience. Lots of people I know who bought MW3 are returning it to the shops to exchange it for something else – shame really as I’ve always been a fan of the COD series but it died for me a while ago. Unsure how IGN arrived at the same score for both games but I guess there are purists for both titles.

I'm Batman

This month sees the release of 3 superb games, well, superb in my eyes – Forza Motorsport 4, Batman: Arkham City and Battlefield 3. The trouble is that Christmas is just on the horizon too so spending wisely is absolutely paramount. I have a 20 quid voucher for Game stores which will help take the sting out of the hundred quid plus I’ll need to find if I want to go for all 3. Do I need all 3? My mind obviously says yes. My mind also says burn your credit card and pick up RAGE, Dark Souls and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – thankfully I can take control of my mind this close to Christmas. I do have Gears Of War 3 winking at me from the book shelf suggesting that I also use this as a bargaining chip against the above games. The thing is I LOVE GOW and seeing how I kept the other 2 would it be a tragic loss to just chop it in without finishing it on insane? I’m torn…

Dammit hardware bods! Make a decent wheel for the 360!

Gaming dilemmas normally get sorted with me quite quickly but this is tough! Do I really have the time to dedicate to Forza 4? It’s a superb racing sim and better than Gran Turismo 5 in my opinion but it does take time to get into. Battlefield 3 is a no brainer, I’ll 100% pick this up. Could GOW 3 be worth £30? This way I’ll get Battlefield 3 on the PC gratis! Good times.

So the toss up remains between Batman and Forza. If the above theories are correct and IF I get £30 for GOW3 then my game voucher goes toward one or the other, this leaves me £60 to find…

How could anybody say no to this game.

Decisions, decisions...

I’ve been using this little gem to tweak my gear on WOW. If like me reforging confuses you (yes I’m a little sad thanks for noticing) then this will sort you right out! It also suggests best in slot for various different specs. Papamac and Jammy – I suggest you guys look at this as soon as humanly possible! If ever our guild wipes its naturally Jammy’s fault. He may not even be logged on and playing but its still his fault – possible guild rules revision in progress… Papamac is an up and coming healer (although i think we miss his DPS) who’s life has gotten easier in raids since he now follows Jammy, our tank, and basically refuses to heal anyone else! Anyway i digress go here for the awesomeness;

Skimming the net I found this great source of info on the forthcoming instalment of Battlefield. bf3blog.com has a wealth of info including the all important info on updates to classes or kits as they are also known as. It looks like, in my opinion, geared the classes more to roll than in Battlefield Bad Company 2. Take a look, see what you think.

Perfect! this makes a lot more sense than a medic running around with heavy weapons!

Yay! this is the class i love playing and it looks like we get a decent weapon from the off!

Perfect! The support class is just that – stacked with ammo and heavy weapons it creates ‘Goto’ points for soldiers.

Last but not least the Recon roll or ‘Sniper’. Not a whole lot changed here but then this was the most specialised and specific roll.

Why do medics get full on machine guns!?

It’s not long now until the release of the new Battlefield 3 which I’m sure we’re all excited about. Hell I know a few people buying new PC’s to coincide with its release so they get the full ‘creaminess’. How many of us are still playing BFBC2? With not a great deal going on in our WOW guild just now I decided to dust off my account and get back into some fast paced online goodness. I forgot just how great this game is. Coming back to an FPS after months of WOW was a bit of a shock to the system and my initial few hours were RUBBISH! I couldn’t hit a barn door with a basketball! Had I really degraded this much? The simple answer was yes! And dam embarrassed I was too – I jumped straight into games with my WOW pals and consistently provided easy points for the opposition…

Must....train....harder...!

…So guess what I did ALL weekend? That’s right I plonked myself in front of the PC and didn’t stop playing until I was averaging a minimum of 2000 point a match. This isn’t to say I didn’t have my ‘Hail Mary’ matches where I pulled in a good 10,000 but it felt good to be doing something other than Firelands raiding. I decided it was my target recognition that was failing me but I soon sorted that out. Oh sweet first person shooters seems I’ve missed you more than I thought but naturally, as the title suggests, it’s all just training in prep for the new BF3.

During October it’s going to be an expensive month for gamers with 3 great titles coming out. Well I say great but no one (as far as I know) has really played them yet! They are of course Forza Motorsport 4, Batman: Arkham City and Battlefield 3. Battlefield 3 is the easy one as I’ve been a fan of the series from day 1 but where to spend my hard earned cash otherwise? Gears of War 3 will be purchased this month and I’m just like everyone else I don’t have money coming out of my ears although if anyone out there does please send me any of the above games, I’d really appreciate it oh and as a side not go to the doctors as money pouring out of ones lugs can’t be healthy…

The original Batman game Arkham Asylum was superb and anyone playing it would surely agree. I particularly liked the little unexpected touches in the game. There’s a level where lots of the henchmen are welcoming you to a party by cheering and wearing party hats and playing as Batman I wasn’t having any of this so I smacked the bejesus out of the lot of them and bingo! Achievement unlocked ‘Party Pooper’ – result.

Then there’s Forza. Not the sort of game you’re an instant pro at but if you’re prepared to give it a few hours of love weaving through the field in a car you’ve meticulously tuned can sure throw you a big rubbery one.

Decisions, Decisions…

I can’t even think ahead to November just yet! Dam my birthday being in January…

Queuing for hot dogs?

With a global release date of Tuesday 20th of September this game has got both me and Rich VERY excited. After playing the first 2 offerings to death (and maybe beyond) there was only one thing to do – have Monday and Tuesday off in an attempt to get the game early. We’re probably deluding ourselves as it’s a global release and no one is likely to get it early. According to some sources GOW3 will allow Xbox 360 owners, who also have a 3D TV, to play is stereoscopic 3D! Do we think this will add anything to the game play? HELL YEAH! Surely cleaving someone in half, 3D style with the chainsaw tip of your rifle will look super creamy (and bloody). Sadly I don’t have a 3D TV nor do I know any of my friends who have one and I doubt your local stores will have this on in store due to the age restriction. Ahhh well I have no doubt it’ll still be super sweet.

Rod Fergusson, the executive producer at Epic Games, had this to say;

“It felt like something we wanted to have. It was a feature we didn’t want to be deficient in. When you look at Gears 1, it was what people used to demo HD at the time. It’s still fledgling technology. It’s still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not? It’s a little bit jaggier in certain areas. Instead of 720p you’re at five something, As you look forward, in the next XDKs [Xbox Development Kit] coming out of the Xbox, it’ll have more support for 3D or more higher quality for native support for 3D.”

The game wasn’t designed to be in 3D from the off so don’t expect it to blow your gaming minds but hey its shows growing support for 3D gaming on consoles.

My fave mode on 2 was Horde Mode. Up to 4 players attempting to defeat wave after wave of ever increasing enemies. It looks like they’ve ramped it up in 3 to include the ability to build additional defensive structures…

Decisions, decisions...

Patrick Bach stated this week that the console versions of the new Battlefield offering, Battlefield 3, will be restricted to a max of 24 players down enormously from the PC’s 64 players.

“…The biggest difference between the PC and console version of Battlefield 3 is that we have 64 players on PC and 24 players maximum on console. The rest is more or less the same. We use the same engine, the same technology, the same animation system and the same lighting system. Our aim is to give the player the exact same experience and not try to dumb down the console version. If you want the same quality of game, I would say it’s really, really hard. We tried to get more players in but then you need to scale down all the graphics, scale down all the destructibility, and sometimes you need to scale down all the map sizes. Everything is a compromise on, where do you cut? You could argue that other games do [fewer] players as well. There are games that do less, and there are games that do more. We don’t see games that have more players as a better experience, so having more players doesn’t automatically give you a better experience….”

He continued to highlight the differences in the games maps between PC and Console;

“…When we say they are smaller, it’s not that we have cut them in half. But we tried to compact them slightly to keep the action up. If you compare it to Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the maps weren’t really small on console. We actually had huge maps even for console. We have the same kind of angle on it right now. We want to create the same experience for PC as for consoles…”

Quite a bizarre closing statement considering the opening comments…
